About the session:

Once described as "forever obsolete", taonga pūoro are the instruments of Te Ao Māori and have experienced a revival over the last 50 years. They are a gateway to the past but have a myriad of present and future applications, particularly in a holistic health sense. This short online session will explore a few taonga pūoro and how they can be utilised today. These taonga were and are a part of our world, and the hope is that participants will gain an understanding of a critically endangered practice.

Hosted by NZAPP Executive member Tina, this session will gently explore the connections between this ancient knowledge and contemporary positive psychology, highlighting how evidence for wellbeing can be found and understood in many forms.

About the speaker:

Mikaere Berryman-Kamp

Mikaere Berryman-Kamp (Te Puku o Te Ika, Pākehā) is a maker, player and researcher of taonga pūoro, customary Māori instruments. As a descendant of Tūtānekai taonga pūoro runs in his blood and he is motivated to bring this practice back into the day to day and to his people. He has been fortunate to be mentored by many throughout the motu and acknowledges those who have helped him to where he is today. Mikaere is a proud member of Tāmaki Oro Rau, a taonga pūoro collective for like-minded practitioners based in the wider Auckland area. He runs regular wānanga helping people to connect with these taonga in a culturally-safe way. Alongside the mātauranga he has gained from this practice he holds a conjoint BCom/BA (Management/Psychology & International Relations) from Te Herenga Waka, the Victoria University of Wellington.
